Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) With Near Infrared Laser May Improve Neuronal Cell Function in Parkinson’s Disease

Thursday June 25, 2009
Many scientists think that one of the malfunctioning systems in Parkinson's disease is located in the mitochondria. These are the cellular systems/organelles that produce energy for all the other systems of the body and they also help to detoxify the brain and body by helping to regulate the amount of oxygen free radicals that are circulating in the system. Now researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have shown that a single, brief treatment with a 810 nm low level, near-infrared laser enhanced the functioning of mitochondria in cells taken from patients with PD. LLLT is already being used to treat a wide range of human conditions involving injury and inflammation. It may also hold promise for treatment of PD.
